About yarnwears

One thread, start to finish.

We knit a small run of pieces each season, from fibre we can trace back to the farm. No middle steps we can't name, no volumes we can't stand behind.

How we started

A workshop, two machines, and a long list of things we wouldn't do.

We began by fixing a problem we kept running into as customers: knitwear that pilled after one winter, sold with nothing on the label to explain why. So we started at the other end. Choose the fibre first, knit to a gauge that holds, and let the price follow from that.

Everything still moves through one workshop. The people who set the machines are the people who check the finished piece, which is slower than sending it out and the reason we only put out what we can watch.

If we can't tell you where it came from, we don't sell it.

Fibre to finished

Four stages, one thread.

Every piece follows the same route through the workshop. Here is the whole of it.

04

Sourcing

We buy fibre direct, in lots small enough to inspect by hand. Every lot carries a number that stays with the piece all the way to the label.

05

Spinning

The yarn is spun to our twist, not bought off the shelf. A tighter twist costs more and is the reason the surface still looks new after a season of wear.

06

Knitting

Two machines, set by hand for each style. We knit to a fixed gauge rather than to a deadline, so a run takes as long as it takes.

07

Finishing

Washed, blocked, and checked seam by seam in the same room it was knit in. Anything that fails goes back on the machine or doesn't ship.

The current run is on the shelves now.

Each season's pieces stay up until the run sells out, then the page changes. Nothing gets restocked twice.
